Wall Prep 101: Where a Great Paint Job Really Starts

October 20, 2026 · 1 min read

Pros know the secret: most of a great paint job happens before the can is opened. Paint doesn't hide problems. It highlights them.

  1. Clear the room. Move furniture to the center and cover it. Take down outlet covers, switch plates, and wall hangings.
  2. Clean the walls. Dust, grease, and fingerprints stop paint from sticking. Wipe walls with a mild soap and water mix, and give kitchens extra attention. Let them dry.
  3. Fill holes and dents. Use spackle and a putty knife, then sand smooth once dry.
  4. Caulk gaps. Run paintable caulk along cracks between trim and walls for a clean, finished look.
  5. Sand glossy spots. A light scuff with a sanding sponge helps new paint grip shiny surfaces.
  6. Prime where needed. Spot-prime patches and stains so they don't show through.
  7. Tape and cover. Tape trim and lay drop cloths.

It feels slow, but skipping prep is the number one reason DIY paint jobs peel, look blotchy, or show every flaw.

Bottom line: Clean, patch, sand, and prime, and the painting itself becomes the easy part.
