How to Store Leftover Paint for Touch-Ups
Leftover paint is gold when it comes to fixing scuffs later, but only if you store it right.
- Clean the rim. Wipe paint out of the groove so the lid seals tightly.
- Cover the opening. Lay plastic wrap over the can before putting the lid on for an extra seal.
- Seal it tight. Tap the lid down with a rubber mallet, not a regular hammer, which can dent it.
- Label everything. Write the room, color name, brand, and date on the lid with a marker.
- Store it right. Keep paint somewhere cool and dry. Freezing and high heat can ruin it, so garages in extreme climates aren't ideal.
- Save small amounts in jars. A little paint in a clean, sealed jar is perfect for quick touch-ups.
How long does it last? Properly sealed latex paint can last for years. If it smells sour, looks lumpy, or won't mix smoothly, it's time to replace it.
Getting rid of old paint: Check your local rules. Many areas have paint recycling or drop-off programs.
Bottom line: Clean, seal, label, and store it somewhere mild.
