How to Patch Nail Holes and Small Dents Like a Pro
Those little holes from old pictures will show right through fresh paint unless you fix them first. The good news: it's easy.
You'll need: lightweight spackle, a putty knife, a sanding sponge, and a damp cloth.
- Prep the hole. Knock down any raised edges or loose bits with the putty knife.
- Fill it. Press a small amount of spackle into the hole with the knife, then scrape across it at an angle to leave it nearly flush. A tiny bit extra is fine, because spackle can shrink as it dries.
- Let it dry. Small holes often dry in under an hour. Deeper dents may need a second thin coat.
- Sand smooth. Lightly sand until you can't feel the patch when you run your hand over it.
- Wipe away dust. Use a damp cloth.
- Spot-prime. Dab primer on the patch so it doesn't show up as a dull spot under your paint.
For bigger holes (larger than a coin or two), use a mesh patch kit or call in help. Spackle alone may crack.
Bottom line: Fill, dry, sand, prime. Five minutes of work makes your walls look brand new.
