Cleaning Brushes and Rollers So They Last for Years
A good brush can last for years, or be ruined in one day. It all comes down to cleaning.
For latex paint
- Scrape off the extra. Wipe the brush on the can rim. For rollers, use a 5-in-1 painter's tool to squeeze paint back into the can.
- Wash with warm, soapy water. Work the soap into the bristles with your fingers, especially near the base.
- Rinse until the water runs clear.
- Comb the bristles. A brush comb removes stubborn paint and straightens bristles.
- Shake or spin out the water.
- Reshape and store. Put the brush back in its original cardboard sleeve, or hang it so the bristles keep their shape.
For oil-based paint: Clean with mineral spirits instead of water, then wash with soap. Dispose of used spirits according to your local rules.
Don'ts
- Don't pour paint or rinse water down storm drains.
- Don't let paint dry in the bristles.
- Don't store brushes standing on their bristles.
Bottom line: Clean right away, rinse until clear, and store flat or hanging.
